Hermanus Golf Club Junior Championship

As good as it can possibly be! These words from interested bystanders accurately summed up the exciting finish to the 2012 Junior Championship which took place on Monday 1st October.

After 36 holes, two of the juniors had tied on 159gross. Both Tyron Davidowitz and Carel Garbers had joined the Club in 1996. Together with the other juniors in the “nursery” section of our Junior Program, they started from scratch.  Six years later, long hitting Carel Garbers, playing off 4, was very disappointed with his first round score of 82 gross and followed it up with a brave, fighting back 77. Tyrone who earlier this year achieved single figure status, played off a 9.  Playing wonderfully steady golf resulted in a first round gross score of 80 followed by 79. The Club Rules prescribe a three hole stroke- play play off.  Followed by a group of their fellow juniors, the duo teed off on the 19th hole. Arriving at the 21st par 3 hole, the contenders were still level pegging. Misfortune struck when Carel’s tee shot landed in thick bush to the left of the green. Tyrone put his safely on the green, within birdy put distance of the cup. Keeping his composure, and true to the mantra, “It’s never over until the fat lady sings” Carel, with no shot possible, took a penalty drop. He played a beautifully lofted shot to the green, but when it was not holed, accepted defeat graciously and congratulated Tyrone on his victory.
