BirdLife Overberg Golf Day for the Black Eagle

The members of BirdLife Overberg hosted their second annual charity golf day on 24 February 2011 at the Hermanus Golf Club to raise funds for their educational campaigns. The project that will benefit from these fund raising efforts is the development of birding resources for environmental education centres in the Overberg. The pilot projects are at the Agulhas and Bontebok National Parks and the Potberg centre at the De Hoop Nature Reserve. BirdLife Overberg is the regional branch of BirdLife South Africa and its members attempt to realize the aims of the national organization in the Overberg. Several fund raising events have been undertaken in the past and the presentation of this golf day in collaboration with the Hermanus Golf Club is a logical continuation of the club’s fund raising efforts.

The weather on the day was perfect in that it was windless (believe it or not) and there was a mist cover throughout the day. The stars of the show were undoubtedly the Verreaux’s Eagle, Barn Owl and African Wood-Owl that Andre from Eagle Encounters displayed. Most golfers took the opportunity to have photographs taken of themselves with the eagle on their arm and several of them phoned their wives to bring their children over. This resulted in heavy traffic at the reception area – “die plek het gekook”. The antics of these birds had the players in awe. Members of BirdLife Overberg worked at the halfway refreshment stands sponsored by Eastcliff Spar, Stretton’s Gin and Tru-Cape and this contributed to a great atmosphere on the day.
There was some good quality wine on offer for raffles and Wina Lobser managed to talk participants out of lots of money in this process. (A total of R 3,445.00). A spontaneous putting competition was also set up at the end of the day and it was surprising that a further R 500.00 was raised in this way. The highlight of the day was certainly the prize giving ceremony in the evening that was attended by the vast majority of participants, as well as other guests. The fourth prize (four rounds of golf at Arabella Golf Course) was won by a team of two marshals and two caddies who’s participation in the day was sponsored – it is wonderful that these guys now have the opportunity to play Arabella. The third prize (four framed prints of great Overberg birds donated by local artist MC Botha) was won by John Simson’s team. The second prize (eight shark dive adventures generously donated by Great White Shark Tours) was won by teacher Mikki Milne and three learners from the Hermanus High School, who also took part as BLO’s sponsored guests. The overall first prize, four weekends for couples at Protea Hotels of their choice was won by Chicken Basson’s team.
