The world’s biggest amateur golf tournament, played on a single golf course, is coming to Hermanus in March 2025.
The Nomads Golf Club of South Africa will be hosting their annual tournament at Hermanus Golf Club from 16-20 March 2025. No less than 320 players from Nomads clubs around the world will be competing in three rounds of golf over four days.
The Nomads Golf Club of South Africa is the world’s largest charity golf club. The Nomads Golf Club is built on two main pillars – caring for the needy, and the furtherance of golf in SA.
Nomads through recent years, have raised around R50 million for various charity organisations around the country. There are 12 clubs in the different regions and each club has annual projects to raise funds for the needy. A wish list is obtained from non-profitable charity organisations and the Nomads, from the funds that they raised, buy goods or pay for services on behalf of those organisations. They never hand over cash.
Nomads also do the scoring at professional Sunshine Tour tournaments. The Nomads individuals don’t get paid for their services but instead the Tour pays an amount to Nomads for every tournament, and that money is spent, in consultation with SA’s golfing body GolfRSA, on junior, ladies, disabled golf and golf development in South Africa. Also here the Nomads have invested around R40 million over recent years in golf development in our country.
Nomads have 12 clubs in South Africa and a further seven international clubs around the globe. In South Africa each of the 12 clubs take turns to host the national tournament on behalf of Nomads Golf Club of South Africa. The Boland club is responsible for the 2025 National tournament and well-known businessman, Mark Philp, and his coordinating committee will be responsible for hosting this event, attended by the 320 players, their partners and the sponsors.
Hosting a tournament of this size involves a lot of planning. The Nomads will extend the clubhouse for the week, to ensure that 450 people can comfortably attend prize giving and dinner in the evenings.
Golfers will start play at 07:00 every morning and although Hermanus is a 27 hole course, only holes 1 to 18 will be utilized for the week. Golfers who finished their rounds or do not play on a specific day will be entertained during the day at an area on the golf course, with further entertainment in the evenings at the clubhouse.
Golfers play for individual prizes as well as several team competitions, including the Bert Hunt trophy for best SA club, as well as several international trophies.
Nomads National PRO, Alten Hulme, told Hermanus Times that each of their national sponsors will have representation there for the week.
“Nomads will no doubt boost the economy hugely in Hermanus for the week as golfers and their spouses will visit the many restaurants, wine farms and other tourist attractions during the week.” Hulme also added that accommodation is already at a premium for the week, and many Nomads have indicated they will remain in Hermanus for the long weekend after the tournament.
This will be the second time that Hermanus plays host to this event. The last time was in 1999 when Boland, as a young newly formed club, hosted this event in Hermanus.
